~ The Story So Far ~

Sabine's story actually begins with a woman named Jacqueline Renard, a Wildwood elezen who worked as a tavern maid at Buscarron's Druthers in the Shroud. One night, a handsome and charming man named Henri Caillouet came to the Druthers to stay for an evening. He was quite obviously wealthy, given the quality of his clothing and the gil he poured out that night for service and tips. The moment he laid eyes on Jacqueline, he was utterly enraptured by her beauty. Flattered by his many compliments, Jacqueline was convinced to join him in his room for intimate activities. Jacqueline was not a naive woman by any sense of the imagination and knew that she'd likely never see him again, so while he was sleeping, she helped herself to his gil pouch and stole a signet ring with his initials upon it.Lucky for her, Henri did not notice her thievery when he left the next morning, bound back for Ishgard. A moon later, Jacqueline learned she was with child. She wrote to Henri, but her letters were returned unopened. And thus was Sabine born into the world. Raising her daughter on her own, Jacqueline saved every last gilpenny she had to make sure that Sabine had a proper education. She was determined that she would not be obliged to make her living as a tavern wench, but would go on to soar higher than her mother had ever dreamed. Sabine helped, ambitious even from a young age; having inherited her mother's beauty and charm, she coaxed coins for wildflowers from tavern visitors.When she was sixteen, Sabine applied for a scholarship to the Sharlayan Studium and was accepted with a full ride. She excelled in her studies, advancing quickly through her classes - learning the precise processes for creating medicines, antidotes, solvants, vaccines, reagents and more. Her time at the Studium was not all pleasant, however; being a half-breed more intelligent than practically all of her classmates, she was subjected to sneers, lewd jokes and generally poor behavior from jealous colleagues.Quickly becoming weary of the cruel treatment, and with some unauthorized after-hours experimentation in the lab, Sabine discovered her real talent was for poisons, both lethal and otherwise. She was careful; the death of a student would launch a full investigation... but a roiling stomach? A case of hives? None of these would cause any alarm bells to be sounded. And, while it didn't stop the relentless ridicule, watching her classmates fall to misery entertained her enough to bear it through until her time at the Studium was completed.Just after she graduated, she received a message that her mother was gravely ill and to return home at once. She packed her bags immediately, journeying back to the Shroud and although she tried to save her with her medicines, they did no good. She was just in time to say goodbye, and to be given the signet ring with her father's initials.Instead of seeking him out, however (he'd clearly not wanted her, after all), she returned to her studies in Sharlayan, working towards an advanced degree, both participating in, and leading, several expeditions to Saint Mocianne's Arboretum and visiting the Great Work in Thavnair to expand upon her already vast knowledge. After just three years and upon her return to Sharlayan, she was awarded the title of 'Sage' from the Studium and granted a tattoo, indicating her mastery of her chosen field.

Buscarron, bless his soul, felt badly that the girl's father had abandoned her and treated her as the daughter he'd always wanted but never had.+ Hook : Sharlayan-educated Sabine began her studies at the Studium at the age of sixteen. It only took her five years to earn an advanced degree in alchemy, with a minor in botany. She has both participated in and led successful expeditions to Saint Mocianne's Arboretum with colleagues as part of her studies, and has also visited the Great Work in Thavnair to learn new recipes and techniques.+ Hook : Underworld Ties Though it isn't widely known, Sabine makes and sells illicit substances that are highly effective, ranging from uppers, downers, hallucinogens and others. Even less known is that, for the right price, she also makes poisons, lethal and otherwise.

+ Hook : Inheritance Stolen It was just after she returned to Sharlayan from Thavnair that she chanced to spot an obituary for Henri in one of the international newspapers that the Studium subscribed to - and the news that the entire fortune of the estate had been awarded to one Fiannaut Glaseux, who was evidently her half-brother. Incensed, she made it her mission to find a way closer to her half-brother and confront him with the truth.

Greenhouse and apothecarium, Renard's Apothecarium is located in the South Shroud, not far from Buscarron's Druthers. On offer are a wide variety of potions, tinctures, ointments, poultices and other medicinal substances. Lesser known are the illicit drugs that are also sold there, and even lesser known are the various poisons. They are available, however, if you know how to ask for them...
